Principal Seeks to Keep Story Program Going
The Sentinel (Spotswood, NJ),

Summary:
The youngest students at the Schoenly School have been listening to stories to improve language skills and even read and write, according to school Principal Julia Rhodes.
For the past two years, the school has been using a grant-funded storytellers program to augment the curriculum while employing a favorite activity of students.
Rhodes said research shows there is a close connection between oral language development and reading and writing skills, and that students must learn to develop their listening and oral skills before they read and write. The school helped confirm that research.
"We saw a tremendous increase in our kids’ abilities to read and write," Rhodes said.
"The kids who just finished first grade wrote wonderful stories with great beginnings and a sense of development," she added.
