Education Articles

"When you tell a story, the words come alive and an immediate connection is made."
-- Kevin Cordi, storyteller and teacher

"It is the duty of the present to convey the voices of the past to the ears of the future."
-- a Norwegian saying

Bill Harley shows how storytelling can get through to students, even those who aren't speaking in class.

A Michigan teacher and her students describe how they learned to become storytellers.

The articles below describe various uses of storytelling and education, including:

  • a research study which proved that attitudes of primary school students toward science quantitatively improved after listening to folk tales about constellations, followed by the science explanations

  • a program in Montreal's multiethnic schools where storytelling is helping heal migrant and refugee children from war-torn countries

  • World Stories is a website that offers interlingual resources celebrating the 21 most spoken languages in UK school students' homes. The stories are both in English and the language the story. This provides a unique opportunity for teachers to raise students' awareness of the beautiful scripts and sounds of many different languages. And for multinational classes, where students come from different cultures, here is an opportunity for their heritages to be acknowledged among their peers.

  • parents using their Mexican American tradition of storytelling to interest their children in reading

  • a new "near miss" reporting system where operating room stories are being collected, analyzed and shared for educational purposes

Storytelling is taught at over 60 colleges and universities across the country. For a list of these institutions, plus others worldwide, see A World-Wide List of Courses In and/or About Storytelling Taught at Colleges and Universities , a list originally compiled by Eric Miller in 1998, and updated by Millie Jackson in July 2006; last updated December 2010.
