Diversity Articles

"Hearing genuine, powerful stories brings racism alive for participants."
-- Doug Harris, managing director of The Kaleidoscope Group, a Chicago-based diversity-consulting firm

Here are excerpts from Tribes & Bridges, a performance at Chicago's legendary Steppenwolf Theater, where storytellers Antonio Sacre, La'Ron Williams, and Susan O'Halloran speak about the difficult issues of racism and inequality through insightful, engaging, and powerful tales.

The articles and web sites below describe various uses of storytelling and diversity education, including:

  • corporate diversity-training sessions for organizations including Blue Cross and Blue Shield and the University of Minnesota's School of Architecture

  • Race Bridges for Schools has free stories about diversity, inclusion and racial justice. These stories come with Lesson Plans and audio downloads for classrooms and groups. The goal of Race Bridges is bring races together. High School age through Adult.

  • World Stories is a website that offers interlingual resources celebrating the 21 most spoken languages in UK school students' homes. The stories are both in English and the language the story. This provides a unique opportunity for teachers to raise students' awareness of the beautiful scripts and sounds of many different languages. And for multinational classes, where students come from different cultures, here is an opportunity for their heritages to be acknowledged among their peers.

  • A grassroots organization in Atlanta where Jewish and Muslin women bake and share stories together while breaking down cultural stereotypes
