4-H Adds Storytelling to its Statewide Competitions

Troy Messenger (Troy, AL) , March 6, 2007

"The storytelling competition is designed to teach public speaking skills in a fun way and also as a way of teaching young people about history, especially their family histories," said Tammy Powell, Pike County Extension System coordinator.

"A lot of times, young people don't think about the stories they hear in church or the stories that their grandparents might have told them about their families as material for public speaking."

"By participating in the storytelling competition, they will learn to use those types of stories and also learn a lot about their family histories."

Subjects Covered: education, personal storytelling
