National Literacy Project Telling its Story in Evansville Originally published in Evansville Courier & Press (Evansville, IN), August 30, 2007 Keywords: elementary school, art, personal storytelling ABSTRACT Mary Jo Huff laughs along with the students at Daniel Wertz Elementary School during her visit to the school as part of a national literacy program called The StoryBox Project. Huff, a local storyteller, entertained the students before they created their stories to go into the Story Box. There isn't much Mary Jo Huff loves more than a good story. When she's surrounded by children, with a puppet on her hand, the Newburgh grandmother is in her element. She tells the children their imaginations can take them anywhere they want to go. So Huff, an author, professional storyteller and former preschool director, is ecstatic that Evansville is the current stop on the Story Box Project's world tour. Developed 12 years ago by professional storyteller and Ohio State University teacher Kevin Cordi, the project allows children from around the globe to create their own stories and share them with one another.
